Insects are just one of the many groups of invertebrates. It is estimated that 90% of all animal species are insects with scientists thinking there may be between 6 and 10 million insect species alive today!
There are several features that are common across insects.
- They have a hard exoskeleton
- They have 6 legs
- They have 3 body parts: head, thorax and abdomen
- They have a pair of antennae
- They have ‘compound eyes’. This means each eye is made up of lots of tiny units with each acting like a little eye.
Use these features to sort the insects from the other invertebrates!
