Insect

Insects are just one of the many groups of invertebrates. It is estimated that 90% of all animal species are insects with scientists thinking there may be between 6 and 10 million insect species alive today!

There are several features that are common across insects.

  • They have a hard exoskeleton
  • They have 6 legs
  • They have 3 body parts: head, thorax and abdomen
  • They have a pair of antennae
  • They have ‘compound eyes’. This means each eye is made up of lots of tiny units with each acting like a little eye.

Use these features to sort the insects from the other invertebrates!
