On this website you can learn about mammals. You can upload image sequences from camera traps, view sequences and classify the animals you spot there. 

Here we suggest how you can start to use the site, where you can find out more information and ways to practise your skills. 

1 Find our user guides

You can find useful "How To" articles on the Learn tab under Guides.

2 Learn about animals

Hare

If you are new to mammals, you can learn about them on the the Learn tab under Guides.

In the species guide you can view an image and description of each animal.

You could choose a few common species, such as badger, red fox, grey squirrel and roe deer to learn first, or look at the different deer species.

3 Create your account

Before you can use the Spotter, Trapper and Quiz areas of the site you need to have an account. 

Register

You will be sent an email with a link to click to confirm your registration.  If you don't see it, please check your Junk mail.

 

 

 

4 Try a quiz

Try out one of our quizzes - you could start with UK mammals. 

Test yourself

You can repeat the test to check your improvement.

 

 

 

 

5 Have a go at spotting

From Contribute > Spotter choose Classify All and have a look at some image sequences. Click on the species to classify.

How to classify

On the Spotter tab you can see a few statistics (these are updated overnight) and the different Classify options. You could select a project to classify.

When you click on the species, you are shown an image and information about the animal, so you can check your choice before saving.

6 Browse our projects

On the Projects tab you can view the wide variety of MammalWeb projects.

Click through to get more detail on a particular project and a link to classify for that project.

 

 

 

 

 

7 Set up a camera

Roe deer

If you have a camera, set it up and record some image sequences or videos.

How to set up a camera

Make sure you know the location of the camera and what the habitat is.

8 Upload your images

Red deer

Navigate to Contribute > Trapper to create a new site and upload your images.

How to upload images

You can quickly upload more images to this site if you take them in the same place with the same camera.

9 Look at the map

Rabbits

Choose Learn > Map to see where animals have been spotted.

View map

You can see site locations, where particular species have been seen and the top species spotted in each map area.
