FZS - Ukrainian Carpathians Programme

The primeval and old-growth forests of the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains represent functioning natural ecosystems inhabited by incredible wildlife and offer irreplaceable beauty. Here, you can find three large carnivore species (brown bears, wolves, and Eurasian lynx) as well as a diverse array of other large mammals including the charismatic European bison.

The protected areas where these animals are found encompass many outstanding wild places that require the long-term support of local and international partners to secure these forests for the future. As part of this process, Frankfurt Zoological Society has initiated wildlife monitoring across many national parks and other protected areas, to provide managers and scientists with information on the species which rely on these places to thrive. This information helps to improve conservation actions for protected areas in the region.
