Species: Common wasp
Scientific name: Vespula vulgaris
Appearance: Abdomen is striped black and yellow. Less hairy than bees. Obvious ‘waist’ area separating thorax and abdomen. Head is triangular shaped.
Size: Workers are 1.2-1.7 cm long, queens roughly 2cm.
Natural History: Wasps are in the same order as bees but have a few differences. The common wasp feeds on other insects as well as sugary nectar and fruits. They can also sting repeatedly but only tend to do so when disturbed or threatened.
