Naturally Native

Naturally Native is developing a landscape scale approach to water vole conservation in the North East, preventing loss of this charismatic mammal and aiding its recovery. In the past 80 years, water voles have declined by over 90%, making them one of Britain’s fastest declining mammals. The two major factors contributing to this decline are habitat loss and predation by the non-native American mink. In order to plan effective water vole conservation efforts across the North East, it is essential to gather data on current locations of both water voles and American mink.

Naturally Native is a partnership project being delivered between Durham Wildlife Trust, Northumberland Wildlife Trust and Tees Valley Wildlife Trust with thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
