Squirrel Monitoring In Northern England

The Red Squirrel remains at risk of extinction in England because of competition and pox transmission by Grey Squirrels. Northern England contains the bulk of the remaining Red Squirrel refuges in England. Trail cameras are very useful for monitoring the presence of both species. They help to detect Grey Squirrels and to determine where control measures are needed. They also help to show to where Red Squirrels are present and to what extent control of Greys is working.

There is a pressing need to involve more people, particularly landowners and managers in Grey Squirrel control. Another benefit of trail camera pictures is in helping to raise awareness of the problem.

Red Squirrels Northern England coordinate squirrel surveys and control in the region. More information.

Northern Red Squirrels is an umbrella group of local squirrel groups in which volunteers monitor squirrels and control Grey Squirrels in their local area.
