The Ecclesall Woods project

This project is available for public Spotting but Trapping is restricted. If you would like to join this project as a Trapper please contact us at info@mammalweb.org.

Ecclesall Woods are the largest ancient woodland in South-Yorkshire and are located in Sheffield’s south western corner, near the Peak District National Park border.

The Woods are actually three separate woodlands, physically divided by roads. Together, they cover nearly 140 hectares of gently sloping land that is criss-crossed by 15km of public footpaths and bridleways.

This project, by the Friends of Ecclesall Woods, is looking at mammal and bird biodiversity in this urban woodland in Sheffield and giving enthusiastic locals a chance to help categorise wildlife in their area.

The Friends of Ecclesall Woods work closely with the Council’s Parks and Countryside service to undertake regular maintenance and deliver larger projects, to investigate and protect the Woods, and to pass on the knowledge they find.
