We're making some behind-the-scenes upgrades to keep everything running smoothly, which means you'll notice a few changes to the look and feel of the site. Think of it as your favourite nature reserve getting a new visitor centre: everything important is still there, but a few signs have moved and some things look a little smarter. Happily, the tea and cakes haven't become abruptly more expensive.
What to Expect
A fresh look
Many pages, buttons, and menus have had a visual refresh. Things may look a little different, but the functionality you know and love remains the same.
Logging in has moved
One of the biggest changes is how you sign in.
Previously, many users accessed their account via the "Contribute" menu. Now, you'll find a dedicated "Login" option instead (see image A, below).
It's simpler and easier to find, and it keeps your options open.
New sign-in options
You'll also see the option to sign in using a passkey.
A passkey is a secure way to sign in using your device (such as your phone's fingerprint reader or your computer's face recognition), rather than remembering another password. It's entirely optional, so if you're happy using your existing login method, you can continue as before.
Your dashboard comes first
After signing in, you'll now arrive at your dashboard (see image B, below).
From there, you can quickly choose what you'd like to do:
• Take a quiz
• Classify images
• Upload data
• Manage your camera trap sites
Think of it as a personalised home base for all your MammalWeb activities.
Classification options
When you choose to classify images, you'll see the familiar classification tools, along with a new option called "Classify MammalWeb Britain".
This button may not always be visible. When it appears, it provides direct access to a featured project, helping us focus community effort where classifications are most needed.
Intuitive site order
When you visit your Trapper page, the sites are now ordered from the most recently created at the top, to the oldest at the bottom. Hopefully, this helps you to quickly identify the sites you want to upload images to.
A New Feature: Dark Mode
For those who enjoy late-night classifications (or simply prefer a darker colour scheme), MammalWeb now supports dark mode (see image A, below).
Your eyes may thank you. The badgers probably won't notice.
Do I Need to Learn Anything New?
Not really. The aim of these changes is to modernise the site while keeping the core experience familiar. Most users should be able to continue using MammalWeb exactly as before. You may notice a few things have moved house, but all the features you rely on are still here (e.g., see image C, below). We hope the updates make MammalWeb easier to use, and as always, thank you for helping us monitor wildlife across the country.
